500 Years of Raphael

January 21, 2021

Last year marked the 500th anniversary of the death of Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino, known as Raphael, painter, architect, and indisputable genius of the High Renaissance. It was said that Raphael’s brushwork could give flesh and life to anything from complex theology to a flirtatious baker’s daughter. Born in the remote mountain town of Urbino, Raphael rose to the rank of confidant to the Renaissance’s most powerful popes, Julius II and Leo X, who entrusted him with providing the paintings, architecture, and archaeology to reconcile Catholic Rome with its pagan past. Join Alard von Rohr-Demmin as he traces the story of this ‘angel who fell from heaven.’ During the webcast, you will gain an appreciation for Raphael’s short but beautiful life, extraordinary genius and influence on artists of the 20th and 21st centuries including Picasso, Warhol, Cindy Sherman and Bill Viola. At the end of Alard’s 45-minute presentation, there will be time for a live Q & A.

We’ll Always Have Paris: the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the building of the American City

January 26, 2021

From the Gothic confections of Richard Morris Hunt to the visionary skyscraper genius of Louis Sullivan and from the massive Romanesque constructions of Henry Hobson Richardson to the suavely elegant neo-classical landmarks of John Russell Pope, American architecture of the late 19th and early 20th centuries reflected the diverse trends, dictums and ideas of a rapidly growing nation. They all reflected the influence of French academic practices through the famed Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
Join American Friends of the Louvre and David V. Griffin of Landmark Branding LLC for a look at the relationship between both America’s avant-garde and its historical purists to one of France’s most celebrated educational centers and how the teaching methods of the Ecole gave the U.S. – and from there, the world – a new urban language.
