From Afar: Traveling Materials and Objects
In September 2021, the Louvre opened “From Afar: Traveling Materials and Objects,” in the Petite Galerie, an exhibition realized with a grant from American Friends of the Louvre. Addressing the appearance of foreign cultures in European art during the 16th century, the exhibition traces the trajectory of exotic stones, animals and plants along ancient trade routes, and the myths invented by artists to interpret and absorb these strange new objects into their world.
