Grand Patrons of the Louvre’s New Byzantine Department Gather

Major patrons of the project and senior staff of the Louvre Museum gather during the November 3 gathering.
Published: February 5, 2026
Earlier this week, a community of committed patrons gathered at the Louvre for a celebratory moment and presentation sharing project updates on the creation of the new Department of Byzantine Art and Eastern Christianities. Opening in 2028 in the heart of the Denon Wing, this historic undertaking will offer a powerful new narrative connecting Byzantine art, the arts of Islam, and Roman antiquities. Visitors will be able to admire, better understand, and appreciate the masterpieces of Byzantine art, from the origins of Christian imagery to the beginning of the 20th century.
Over 40 million euros has been raised to date in support of this landmark project, of which more than $11 million has been provided by AFL patrons. AFL is grateful to stand alongside the Louvre and its dedicated mécènes in bringing this ambitious vision to life.
